Certified organic seed. From a tiny seed to a 12' tower in just one season: giant sunflowers such as these are vessels of unrestrained garden joy, metaphors of garden power. Domesticated by Native Americans, pre-Columbus sunflowers were smaller and bore fewer seeds than those we know today. It wasn't until the 1500s that sunflower seeds made their way to Europe, eventually arriving in Europe, where they were selected for their size, oilseed production, and beauty. A tall plant with a deep history!
The Package Each year, Hudson Valley Seeds commissions contemporary artists from around the United States to tell the story of a particular seed variety. That art and those seeds combine to create an Art Pack, a unique celebration of the diverse stories of seeds and their stewards.
The Artist Artwork by Dion Yannatos. When you look up on an overcast day in the city, sometimes the tops of the skyscrapers fade away into the atmosphere. Dion's large-scale oil painting depicts these sunflowers as tall enough to reach the same heights.
